Ok, if you are using a cord like you use from the wall jack to the phone then that may be the problem. If you are handy and have a user service box out side then I would suggest you tie into that and run the heavy gauge phone wire to where you need it. Say to within 6 to 10 feet of your computer. That will keep down the trouble, or should. Those patch cords are kinda frail. You might catch one of your local telephone repairmen and ask if he has a peice of inhome phone wire you could have. If he's a nice guy and he's just done a job then he'll have a box that he was just going to throw away. Trouble is that my concept of a full page of print, and the author's are seldom the same, meaning that the page number never appears in the right place. Top and bottom margin spaces are likely to occur half way down the succeeding page, and then pages run right over the perforation. Most often I find myself re-working the docs to remove all page numbering, hard returns and special paragraphing. Then I get a half ways readable document. This usually negates a lot of hard work that somebody at the other end has gone to to make the docs look professional. It happens frequently enough to lead me to believe that there is some sort of page setup convention that I haven't heard about. So... Where does the page start? At the top of the printhead? There is no technical reason why it won't work up to 56k (or higher). The problem is that the C64 itself can't manage these speeds through the user port, so it is really a moot point. It has been a long while since I've used this particular interface, but I can tell you for a fact that it handles 9600bps (using Desterm) without any hassles. RM> Any comments? The biggest cause of this dilemma is because USA doesn't generally use international standard paper sizes.. prefering their own "legal" and "letter" sizes.. The international standards are A3, A4, etc (with A4 being the most common size by far). A4 paper is generally printed at 66 lines per page, but this in itself causes a problem, because if 66lines per page is assumed by the writer, with no formfeed after each 66th line, then things can easily get out of sync if other than A4 paper sizes are used. If however, a formfeed is sent after every 66th line, then the pages *should* print correctly regardless of whether A4, letter, or legal sized paper is used. Another problem is that some programs used for printing tend to either not honour formfeeds, or they will add/insert their own when text is imported for printing, so ideally, any docs should be printed out with the same prg that they were written with, which unfortunatly isn't always known. FWIW, the QWKRR docs are formatted so that they will printout correctly with any of the 3 major paper sizes, when printed out using CSDOS's "type" command.. it ain't fast, but it should print out exactly as intended (myself and Mark Dowsett spent a lot of time getting this right) Cheers, Rod ___ QWKRR128 V4.50 [F] --- FMail 0.94 * Origin: QWKRR128 test point. The docs for QWKRR were done using SuperScript, I think, or at least with something that formats the same. To print them out, set the paper so that QWKRR128 V4.3 Documentation prints out on the very top line of the page. That will give you that header on each page plus a footer with the page number. Other docs are done differently. Some run it all together and all you can do is set the DIP for skip perf and let her run. When you do that, you start on the 3rd line, then it will print 60 lines and skip 6. Desterm was done so you can print it out from the buffer. Set your interface for ascii, load a buffer full and let her rip. You have to set Desterm's printer definition for ascii, too. A page is 66 lines for most 9 pin dot matrix printers. I'm not sure about the 24 pin printers. Most docs will have a half inch margin at top and bottom, or have no margin and expect you to set the DIP. I know that just added to your confusion and I'm sorry. ... The pkt files can be read as plain ASCII but the formatting for the To/From/Date/Echo headers will be a bit messy. The main reason for doing this is so those on the Internet can see the type of messages they can find in the CBM Fidonet echos. I make no promises or guarantees on how often I'll update the file. After all, the reason for presenting the material is so people can see what the CBM Fidonet echos are all about -- not to supply the echos for people to read. In other words, what I'll have available is a *sample* of Fidonet CBM echo mail that's periodically updated. This will take me a few days to get organised - but as soon as it's going I'll post another message. Also, while on the subject of my WWW site, the permanent and ONLY location for it is now: http://hal9000.net.au/~moranec I'm sorry I couldn't keep a USA mirror site, but the good news is that it'll be a lot easier for me maintain and keep just one site updated rather than two. Posting it here would just take up too much space. Don't get me wrong; Novaterm has a nice interface, and does its job adequately. It's just that writing in ML would be preferable than compiled BASIC, especially if one requests more than $20 for the shareware registration. - QWKie v3.1 - --- JMail-H 2.80d * Origin: 221B Baker St * Ft Walton Beach FL * 904-862-8643 (1:366/221) SEEN-BY: 366/221.64 800/809 .64 .PATH: 800/809 [2] CBM (3:800/809.64) CBM Msg : 77 of 250 -30 +95 From : Lee Hyatt 1:366/221 Sun 21 Jul 96 11:29 To : Gaelyne Moranec Subj : @T Or @P On 07-20-96, GAELYNE MORANEC said to RUSSELL PRATER: RP> I can't say what will happen in the monitor, but the JiffyDos RP> command to change default drive numbers is @#n where n is the RP> number you want to be the default drive GM> It didn't work. :-( This seems "odd", though as other GM> CMD/JiffyDOS related commands do work. For instance, if the current GM> drive is a RAMLink, HD or FD drive, I can type @,cpn (where "n" is GM> partition number) and it changes partitions. And the "cd" change GM> directory command also works from the monitor. Hmm..... curious. PMFJI... I always use CTRL-d to change devices (I generally use 4 or 5 drives). This probably wouldn't work for you, though, since that command just cycles through all the storage devices on the daisy-chain (excluding the printer). I take it back... I just looked in my JDOS manual, and CTRL-d works only in direct mode. It *does* say, though, that the command @#n is the same for both direct and program modes, as far as syntax goes. - QWKie v3.1 - Looking for something? On behalf of any others who may be ignorant in the following, will you please tell us how to handle messages that are Non-Text? I have saved these to my buffer and then to disk and would like to know how to interpret them. How do you load and run such files? There is one on conf 37 today. The author states that it is a little "game". I hope that you can find the one to which I refer and post the needed information regarding such posts. Sorry if this sounds vague, I know it is, but maybe you can solve the puzzle. Thanks. T. Once erased, they are gone forever. Perhaps you can upload them to an archival site or pass them on to someone willing to save them for future.
