How about pushing the TCP/IP stuff on to a peripheral controller? A microcontroller board that does the TCP/IP and has a single 8 bit ISA slot to plug a modem (card) into. With provisions for various interfaces to the CBM, the standard serial bus, burst mode, a parallel cable etc. It looks like a disk drive to the computer. Or perhaps something more general. A general purpose controller board/ISA bridge. With various on board options, solder a 765 in here, its a floppy controller board, an 82306 there, its an IDE board, or plug your favorite ISA card in and it's a whatever.
