What must be done to fix that awful sounding SID on the 128DCR? Put in your old SID. You have to do some other modifications, it's all described in the 128DCR schematics at funet. Another option, if you just want to have the digi sound back, is to add a certain resistor. Read all about it here, but I never tried it myself: http://www.student.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/~mjk/ nepa/tuning/increase_digitalvolume.html (Sorry for the linebreak) > 2). Just from looking at the drives, I'd say yes. I was rather playing with the idea of putting a 1571 mech into a 1541-II case, which should be the same problem. But again, I never tried it. > 3). There are several versions of the 1541C: with normal sized board, with the new board, with Alps drive and with Newtronics drive. The normal sized board has to be configured with a jumper to match the drive, I don't know about the small, new board. But I once put a Newtronics drive (without knowing about this difference) into a 1541 that formerly had an Alps drive and it worked. So I'd just give it a try. BTW, the 1541-II board is even smaller. > 4). How far can one extend the keyboard (assuming good shielding) without > encountering trouble? Shielding is not a problem, its the capacitance of the cable. If the cable is too long, the interface lines of the CIA will be stressed too much. I once used a 1m extension and had no problems. > 5). Where does one connect switches to the DCR motherboard to change > device number or disable it? There are two jumper pads in the drive section just under the drive mechanism. Should both be easy to spot. Disabling it completely is more difficult, someone in this group once posted the procedure which involved cutting a copper trace on the board and/or some IC legs.
