Here is the English version from Project64: EXAMPLES: To see how many tries the disk will make to read a particular sector, and whether "bumps" to track one and back will be attempted before declaring the sector unreadable, you can use the following lines. They will read a special variable in the zero page of disk memory, called REVCNT. It is located at $30 hexadecimal. And here's the German translation from my manual: Beispiele: Das folgende Programmbeispiel kann verwendet werden, um sich anzeigen zu lassen, wie viele Versuche das Laufwerk unternimmt, um einen bestimmten Sektor zu lesen und, ob versucht wird, auf Spur 1 und der Diskettenrückseite nicht adressierbare Hilfsspeicher anzulegen, bevor der Sektor für nicht lesbar erklärt wird. ... The whole translation of that manual into German is bad, but errors like these render the manual completely useless. Not only that they translated 'bump' with that 'nichtadressierbare Hilfsspeicher', they also translated 'back' with 'Diskettenrückseite', which is completely stupid in this context. One or two pages later the same error is made again in another example. The translation of the 1571 manual was _much_ better. In the description of the M-W command, there is another mistake, but this time its in the English version as well. The say that bit 7 of REVCNT is responsible for the bump, the lower 6 bits represent the retry value and that the maximum number that can be stored in 6 bits is 31. That's not true, you can store numbers up to 63 in 6 bits. Bit 6, which was used for the retry on halftrack feature in the 1541/70/71, is not used anymore in the 1581. Therefore a bitmap of the REVCNT variable in these drives would look like: bit 76543210 of memory location 106 BHRRRRRR 5,25" drives, B=bump,H=halftrack,R=retries BXRRRRRR 3,5" drives, B=bump,X=don't care, R=retries Nicolas _________________________________________________________________ Email a Friend Sponsored by: Audio Book Club [USEMAP] previous · post reply · next help Click here and test your applications on other platforms.
