    I don't have the circuit in front of me, but since the 2N3904 and 2N3906
have always been my favorite transistors for such applications, I am sure that
those are the ones that I used.  They come in TO-92 plastic packages.  With the
leads pointing toward you, and the flat part of the transistor on the top, from
left to right, Emitter, Base, Collector.

    This diagram is for an NPN transistor (like the 2N3904):
