Simple idea, but >you do have to write your own screen editor and all if you want it to actually >be a programming environment. There's also the flicktty method, which was a 80-columner for Lunix. It used 2 text screens, and 2 character sets, so mem requirements were smaller than a bitmap. 1 char set had characters on the left 4x8 of the cell, and the other used the right 4 pixels for the character. Every frame, the text screen and font were toggled, so frame 1 would be displayed, showing only characters 1,3,5,7... on the line, then the next frame would show characters 2,4,6,8... Hence, to draw "Hello world" on the screen, the handler would put "Hlowrd" on frame 1 and "el ol" on frame 2. Could have been for PAL machines, because it didn't quite work right on mine.
