On occasion a drive can get knocked silly from a vicious copy-protection scheme or from trying to read old and dying/dead disks. The condition is so bad that initializing the drive is useless. It often appears that nothing short of a hardware repair can correct the problem. Before you go that far, however, give the ol' reverse-knocker a RUN. I wouldn't suggest using this program to reverse-knock a 1581, CMD FD or HD drive, or a RAMLink. It will work for 1541s and 1571s set to device #8 though. I got the best results by reverse knocking a drive of mine while a disk was in it rather than when it was empty. If I'm not mistaken, this program comes from the September 1988 issue of RUN magazine.
